Robert Houston Milroy papers, 1874.

The collection includes Milroy's 1842 notebook with class notes on fencing, geometry, mathematics and astronomy taken while a student at Norwich University. Also included are Milroy's notes and illustrations from Captain Alden Partridge's lectures on various military topics. There is also manuscript music for flute by Norwich music instructor, Edwin Sturtevant Perkins, used in Milroy's lessons.

Milroy was born on a farm near the hamlet of Canton, five miles east of Salem, Indiana, but the family moved to Carroll County in 1826. He graduated from Norwich Academy in Vermont in 1843. He moved to Texas in 1845, returning to Indiana in 1847. He was a captain in the 1st Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican War, but did not see any combat action.
